Some objects earn their keep and some wander in by accident, then quietly take over the book.
A mug, a coat, a keyring, a notebook. At first they’re just furniture in the scene. Then they start doing work you didn’t plan for, and suddenly they feel symbolic whether you meant them to or not. I’m never quite sure when to leave that alone and when to pull back before it starts feeling too neat.
Do other writers let recurring objects become meaning by repetition, or do you rein them in once they start looking clever?
