Writing Craft
A recurring object only works if it earns its keep. If it is doing nothing but standing in for theme, it starts to feel like a notice pinned to the page.
The better version is usually both: symbolic enough to matter, useful enough to belong there anyway. A key, a receipt, a book, a stain on a sleeve. Ordinary things carry more weight when they have a job to do.
Otherwise the reader can tell when the writer is hovering over the object, waiting for it to mean something. That rarely helps.
