Publishing
A book can start to look oddly unwell online when its metadata is left to wander.
Same title, slightly different ISBN, one retailer calling it a new edition, another treating it like a fresh book altogether. Before long the thing has split into three versions of itself, none of them quite agreeing on what they are. It is a small administrative mess, but it does strange things to discoverability and reader trust.
Publishing has enough fog in it already without the catalogue record inventing more.
