A filing system, a rota, a closed drawer, a polite refusal. The silence can look like order until you notice how useful it has been to the wrong person.
That is the part I find more unnerving than any grand reveal. Ordinary habits can hide a very old lie.

A lot of the time the suspicious bit is not the silence, it’s the paperwork that keeps producing it. Institutions can be very good at making a delay look like a procedure. By the time anyone notices, the routine has become the alibi. That’s usually where the rot is, tucked into something boring enough that nobody wants to read it twice.
