Writing Craft
A chapter break can be a mercy or a bruise. The cleanest stop is not always the kindest one.
Sometimes the right place is the moment a reader realises, a beat too late, what they’ve just agreed to. That tiny delay does useful work. It leaves the sentence hanging in the air, which is rude but effective.
Too much relief and the tension leaks out. Too much cruelty and it starts to feel like showing off. The trick, if there is one, is knowing when to let the reader breathe and when to make them sit with the consequences for a page or two.
