First draft
In 1840s Durham, a widowed bell-ringer’s daughter takes work copying parish records and quietly discovers that the church accounts do not match the lives of the people who keep them. When a long-buried death is tied to a disputed inheritance, she has to decide whether accuracy is a virtue or a form of betrayal. The city is full of respectable lies, and some of them have teeth.
