Romance
Romance gets sharper when the attraction isn’t built on one person being broadly “better” than the other. Give each character a competence the other can’t quite fake. One reads people, the other fixes things. One can bluff their way through a room, the other knows when the room is lying.
That imbalance does more than create chemistry. It gives them a reason to notice each other without turning either of them into a spectator in their own story. Competence is attractive. Complementary competence is where the interesting friction lives.
