First draft
On the south coast, a municipal archive begins receiving documents that have no record of ever being created: letters from dead residents, planning objections to streets not yet built, and transcripts of conversations nobody remembers having. Mara Vale, the exhausted cataloguer assigned to sort the impossible material, starts to suspect the archive is not preserving the town's past but editing its future. As the missing pieces of her own life begin to surface among the files, she has to decide whether the archive is a fraud, a warning, or the only thing keeping the town coherent.
