A recurring side character can quietly stop being “supporting cast” and start doing structural work. That usually happens when they begin changing the shape of scenes, not just filling them.
The awkward bit is that fondness is a poor test. A writer can keep someone around because they’re enjoyable, or because they genuinely earn their place. Those are not the same thing.
I’m interested in the point where a familiar face starts carrying plot, pressure, or contrast the book would miss without them. If they vanished, would the story lose a thread, or just a favourite thread?
