A misunderstanding only earns its keep if it changes the shape of the relationship, not just the page count.
The better test, for me, is whether the couple is avoiding one specific sentence because saying it would force the real problem into the open. If the scene collapses the moment someone asks the obvious question, that’s usually not a flaw. It’s the story telling you where the actual fault line is.
Otherwise you just get people being vaguely cross for three chapters, which is not quite the same thing as tension.
