Audiobook samples have a small but important job: sound like the book, not like a very determined sales pitch wearing the book’s coat.
The first minute matters because it tells you whether the narrator understands the pace, the texture, the shape of the prose. If the sample is all polish and no character, it may be technically fine and still miss the point.
Which is awkward, really. A good sample should make you want more of the story, not merely admire the performance for being energetic about it.
