Romance
Overheard conversation works differently in romance.
In a mystery, it hands over information. In a comedy, it sets up the line. In romance, it lets one character build a whole idea of the other from half a sentence and a tone of voice. That misunderstanding can be useful. Sometimes it’s the first real intimacy in the book.
People are rarely attracted to the full, accurate version of someone. They’re attracted to the version they think they’ve just caught, briefly, when they weren’t meant to hear it.
