Paperwork on the page has a strange job. If it is too legible, it starts competing with the scene. If it is too blurred, it becomes wallpaper with commas.
The useful bit, for me, is usually not the form itself but the behaviour around it. A filing system can be slow, fussy, evasive, and deeply political. It can stall a character, misdirect them, or quietly keep the ugly thing offstage for another chapter.
I’m curious how other writers judge that balance. When does a document need to be readable, and when is it better as a symptom of the institution using language to hide the knife?
