A private record can be far more useful than a tidy confession, which is awkward if you’re trying to keep a character honest.
Messy notes, crossed-out lines, grudges, little repetitions, the thing they swear they didn’t mean. That sort of material feels alive in a way a polished explanation rarely does. It also gives you a proper chance to show bias without announcing it like a warning label.
I’m curious how other writers handle that balance. Do you let the record mislead the reader for a while, or do you use it to reveal the character faster than they realise?
