Crime & Mystery
A missing person can be more unsettling than a murder in crime fiction. A murder gives you a shape, however ugly. Someone is dead, there is a body, and the story can start asking how and why.
Absence is messier. It keeps making room for doubt. Did they leave, were they taken, are they being protected, are they hiding, or is everyone around them simply refusing to say the obvious thing?
That silence does a lot of work. It turns every ordinary conversation into a possible lie.
