When beta readers all stumble over the same passage, I still find myself wondering which part is actually at fault. Sometimes the scene is muddy in a real, structural way. Sometimes it’s just asking the reader to do a little more work than they want to do at that point.
Those are not the same problem, but they can look annoyingly similar from the outside.
I’m curious how other writers read that signal. Do you treat repeated confusion as a red flag straight away, or do you ever suspect the scene is fine and the reader is just not quite meeting it where it is?
