Crime & Mystery
Crime scenes are often built out of tiny lies rather than one grand one. A missing receipt, a door left “as found”, a witness who tells the truth about everything except the one detail that matters. That’s usually more useful than a dramatic deception, because each person can honestly say they only did their bit.
Which is, of course, how people end up helping to hide a crime without ever agreeing to it in full. A neat little human machine.
It’s one of the better tricks in detective fiction. Less theatrical, more unsettling.
