In 1816, a widowed governess returns to a rain-swept Devon estate to sort the papers of a dead naval officer and finds a correspondence that was never meant to survive him. The letters tie her to his estranged elder brother, a landowner with practical reasons for wanting the past left alone, and inconvenient reasons for not being able to leave her alone either.
