The Salt Ledger
In 1811, after a Customs house fire in Portsmouth destroys part of the port's records, clerk Eliza Vale discovers a ledger that seems to prove a cargo of salt and cloth was quietly rerouted into the hands of smugglers. She follows the paper trail through quays, taverns and damp back rooms, where every ordinary detail matters more than the grand speeches people make about loyalty and law.
