First draft
Set in Dundee in 1889, the novel follows a widowed bookkeeper who takes a temporary post in a jute warehouse and discovers that the firm's ledgers conceal more than bad arithmetic. As she becomes drawn into the lives of the mill workers and the family behind the business, she has to decide what truth is worth when everyone is counting on silence.
