First draft
Set in Bristol in 1817, this novel follows a widowed printer’s clerk who discovers that her late husband has hidden a ledger recording the names of families ruined by a failed merchant house. As she traces the debts through docks, counting rooms, and cramped back streets, she finds the book is not only evidence of fraud but a list of people still willing to destroy each other to keep it buried. The story moves between practical survival and moral compromise, which is usually where history gets interesting.
