In post-war Cheltenham, a widowed cataloguer working in a private library discovers that several names have been quietly removed from a local family archive. As she follows the gaps, she uncovers a decades-old arrangement between a merchant house and the women who kept its accounts, letters and silences in order. The more she restores to the record, the less secure her own place in it becomes.
