In a coastal Welsh town in 1897, a clerk at the customs office discovers that a set of shipping records has been altered to hide more than smuggling. When a small local disappearance begins to echo through the ledgers, she is forced to decide whether the truth is worth losing the only life she has carefully built. The novel follows the slow unravelling of a crime that has been made to look ordinary.
