In 1847 Glasgow, a widowed compositor discovers that the shipping accounts she is correcting hide more than simple fraud. When a dockside death points back to the same names, she has to choose between keeping her head down and exposing men who can bury evidence as easily as they bury people. The book follows a city where honest work is scarce, paper matters, and the wrong line in the wrong ledger can ruin a life.
