Set in Liverpool in the winter after the Second World War, the novel follows a quiet woman who works in a second-hand bookshop near the docks and begins noticing small changes in the people around her. When an unclaimed notebook turns up among donated books, it draws her into a private history that has been carefully hidden in plain sight.
