In 1953, a junior cataloguer at a Sheffield library discovers that a set of misfiled wartime letters points to a local disappearance that was never properly explained. As she follows the paper trail, she has to decide whether the truth matters more than the tidy version the city has settled on. The novel moves between the library shelves, postwar streets and the slow business of revision, both personal and official.
