In 1892 Glasgow, a junior cataloguer at a private lending library discovers that several books have been altered, not stolen, and that the changes point to a hidden dispute between a dead benefactor and the city’s shipping elite. As she follows the trail through reading rooms, warehouses and committee offices, she learns that the missing pages are less important than what someone is trying to keep out of the record altogether.
