In the late eighteenth century, a Bristol chartmaker's assistant finds a damaged coastal atlas said to point to a hidden route used by smugglers, wreckers and naval deserters. When the men hunting the atlas close in, he is forced into a dangerous journey along the western coast, where every harbour has its own version of the truth.
