Seventeen-year-old Elin Mercer spends most evenings helping her dad keep a failing Gloucester corner shop afloat, mostly because it is easier than thinking about what comes next. When a proposed redevelopment threatens the row of shops, she gets pulled into a messy local fight that also forces her to deal with a friend who has gone distant, a brother who wants out, and the fact that staying put can be its own kind of risk.
