Early draft
In late Victorian Exeter, a clerk at a riverside shipping office discovers that a missing account book may be tied to a death long dismissed as an accident. As he follows the trail through warehouses, chapels and cramped back rooms, he finds that the city’s respectable surface hides a careful pattern of lies. The deeper he goes, the more the ledger seems less like a record of trade and more like a list of people someone meant to erase.
