On a maintenance station that services the trade lanes between rival systems, a contract translator starts hearing gaps in the diplomatic traffic that should not exist. When those missing messages point to a hidden dispute over an abandoned relay network, she is pulled into a widening conflict between merchants, border fleets, and the people who keep the routes alive. The story follows the ordinary work that holds a spacefaring civilisation together, and what happens when that work is quietly sabotaged.
