First draft
In 1897, a junior cataloguer at a private library in North Wales discovers that several books have been quietly altered, their missing pages pointing to a long-buried local scandal. As he follows the trail through reading rooms, parish records and family papers, he realises someone is still willing to kill to keep the past in order. The case grows less like a puzzle than a fight over who gets to decide what survives.
