When a failing archivist returns to a half-abandoned coastal house in Cornwall to sort the papers of a dead cousin, he finds the rooms arranged around a sealed salt cellar that should not exist. The house begins to change its occupants in small, practical ways, as if it has learned what each of them is willing to lose.
