First draft
After his father dies, a cataloguer at a small coastal archive returns to Lancaster to clear the flat and discovers a box of unsent letters, half-finished lists and a set of objects that seem to have been kept for reasons nobody explained. As he tries to sort what was left behind, he begins to suspect that the tidy version of his family story was always missing something important. The novel follows the slow, uneasy work of deciding what to keep, what to discard, and what truth is owed to the dead.
