Early draft
In the winter of 1715, a coastal smuggler and former excise clerk is forced to guide a reluctant Jacobite courier along the North Sea shore between Durham and Berwick. Their journey turns into a race through storm, suspicion and divided loyalties, where every village seems to know more than it says. The farther they travel, the less certain it becomes who is carrying the message and who is being carried by it.
