After inheriting a narrow Victorian house on the edge of a neglected coastal estate, Mara Vale moves in expecting damp walls, bad wiring, and a straightforward clearance job. Instead she finds the rooms arranged around an old family practice of keeping the dead politely out of sight, and the neighbours unwilling to say why the house has been empty for so long.
