Early draft
In 1840s Nottingham, a widowed mill clerk discovers that a missing ledger could expose years of unpaid wages, forged accounts and a quiet theft that has kept a whole street in debt. As she follows the trail through workshops, counting rooms and chapel gossip, she has to decide how much truth a town will tolerate when it is finally written down.
