Behind the stories
Peter Hayes writes across young adult and contemporary, with a particular interest in character, atmosphere, revision and the details that turn a manuscript into a finished book.
Readers notice more than writers sometimes give them credit for.

First draft
Seventeen-year-old Eli Mercer helps run his grandmother’s failing print shop in Chester, where the work is small, repetitive and suddenly full of consequences. When he finds a set of anonymous zines hidden in the binding room, he starts tracing who made them and why they seem to describe the private lives of people in his school. The search pulls him into arguments about truth, privacy and what gets preserved when a place is about to shut down.
