When a neglected listening station on the edge of inhabited space starts receiving a signal from a dead warship, its maintenance chief is forced into a dispute nobody wants to own. The message points to an old battlefield, a buried political cover-up, and a fleet that was never properly accounted for. The further she follows it, the more obvious it becomes that the truth is less useful than the lie.
