In 1893, a clerk in a provincial Devon shipping office discovers that a missing ledger has been quietly altering the lives of everyone who depended on it. When a man is found dead in a locked counting room, she starts tracing the ordinary paperwork, favours and omissions that led there. The deeper she looks, the more it becomes clear that the real crime was hidden in plain sight.
