Later first draft
In 1890s Swansea, a dockside clerk discovers that a missing account book is tied to a string of quiet deaths, all of them hidden beneath respectable trade. As he follows the numbers through warehouses, chapels, and fogbound streets, he finds that the town’s salt trade has been built on a lie someone is willing to kill to protect.
