First draft
In 1798, a disgraced customs clerk is sent inland from Cork with a seized ledger that could expose a smuggling network reaching from the coast to the rebel camps. He expects a routine errand and instead finds a country where every road has a witness and every favour has a price. The farther he travels, the clearer it becomes that the ledger is dangerous not for what it records, but for what it can be made to prove.
