The Lantern Debt
In a city where the dead are named in ledgers and kept from wandering by old lantern rites, a quiet archive clerk discovers that the records are being altered to hide a growing debt owed to the underworld. When the lanterns begin to fail, she has to trace the fraud through libraries, burial houses and the people who profit from forgetting. The work is part investigation, part slow disaster, which seems fair enough.
