In 1893 Leeds, a clerk at a disused parish church begins uncovering why a bell was rung in secret on the night a local bookseller vanished. What starts as a nuisance of old records and half-remembered lies turns into a case tied to property, religion, and the tidy way respectable people bury ugly business. The deeper he looks, the more the missing man seems less absent than deliberately erased.
