On the writing desk
Later first draft
When a meticulous copyeditor in Canterbury is hired to rescue a failing independent press, she finds herself working alongside the press's blunt, overextended designer, who is determined to save the business without pretending it is anything other than precarious. Their collaboration begins as a practical fix for a mess of deadlines, reprints and one very awkward audiobook production, then turns inconveniently personal. Both are used to correcting other people's work; neither is especially good at leaving their own lives alone.
