First draft
In the winter after the First World War, a widowed clerk in a Welsh coastal town discovers a set of ledgers hidden in the back room of a defunct shipping office. As she traces the names and omissions in their pages, she begins to uncover how a local family built its respectability on silence, debt and the losses of men who never came home.
