Set in Exeter during the winter of 1943, the novel follows a quiet cataloguer in the county record office who discovers that a set of wartime maps has been altered, not by enemy action but by someone close to home. As air raids, rationing and old loyalties press in, he is drawn into a slow inquiry that unsettles his work, his marriage and his idea of what can be known for certain.
