Later first draft
In 1840s Bristol, a widowed ledger clerk is sent to audit the accounts of a failing dockside trading house and discovers that the books hide more than bad debt. As the city shifts around him, he has to decide whether to protect the people who depend on the firm or expose the fraud that keeps them all afloat. The story follows the ordinary business of counting, copying and carrying on until it turns into something much harder to excuse.
