First draft
In 1798, a disgraced Royal Navy surveyor is sent to chart a chain of ruined forts along the Adriatic coast, where the work is supposed to be routine and the politics are anything but. When he finds evidence that a missing dispatch could alter the balance between empire and rebellion, he is forced to choose between obedience, survival and the truth. The book leans on weather, coastline, and the kind of practical details that make danger feel earned.
