In 1893, a clerk sent to inventory a bankrupt Welsh slate estate finds that one missing ledger seems to explain every quiet ruin on the property. As winter closes in, he is forced to decide whether the truth is worth more than the people who have learned to live beside it. The book follows a small circle of tenants, servants and owners, where the most dangerous things are often the ordinary ones that never get written down.
